Lost in Texas

My mom can beat up your mom.

3.31.2008

Not only does she have a tattoo, but she's also currently tied for number one in her NCAA pool--a pool that actually has a $2000 pot! Unfortunately, she made a fatal mistake, calling the tie break at 116. Now some of you might know that I also severely underestimated the tie break (at 108. I know I know, but last year I grossly overestimated it and well jeeze, I'm bad at math), but at least I don't have money riding on it.

*Also I discovered why I'm top in one pool and bottom in another. Well mostly it's because the smarties over at Common Sense Dancing are better guessers, but also because I made different picks. Accidentally, but still. I spent a good part of last weekend making fun of Fletcher's different bracket strategy, only to have mistakenly applied the same theory. Gooo figure.

That's awesome about your Mom! Is she a college basketball fan? You seem to know a lot about college basketball, does that come from your parents?

I wonder what this year's tournament pools look like . . . the usual joke is that people (usually men) who follow college basketball closely never win office pools because they pick the best teams to win, which is another way of saying that they don't pick enough upsets. The secretary, who picks Vermont to beat Syracuse because a friend of hers just took a trip to Vermont and thought it was pretty, usually wins.

I wonder if, perhaps, this year people who are serious or at least semi-serious fans of college basketball are doing better in pools than they usually do, because all four men's #1 seeds in the final four, and all eight teams remaining in the women's bracket were seeded either #1 or #2. What do you think?

actually, I think a lot of people who aren't serious fans probably did very well this year because aside from the secretary who picked the cutest mascot (pardon the sexism), if you pretty picked by seed, you're doing well. So someone who put a lot of thought into it is going to do as well as someone who just picked the number 1s.

My mom claims to have thought very hard about it, but who knows.

We can talk about these brackets all we want, but you do have to mention in there somewhere that I am going to be the eventual champion of the CSD pool. What's my prize for that? A week of links at CSD?

Also Lauren, your moms totally just picked the highest seeds. There is no way that she bet money on John "I fold in the elite eight" calipari with a Memphis team that she has never seen on tv.

No I swears! Admittedly she didn't watch any games (save for DUke v. UNC and Temple and St. Joe's games), but she did her homework before filling out her bracket. She is the same woman who watches Italian league soccer for fun.
