Lost in Texas

"Under the Volcano" by Malcolm Lowry

2.13.2011

Two books it not enough to call it a trend, but love triangles seem to be a thing that the MLA is into. At least platonically.

Unlike most stories about foreigners and foreign-ness, Under the Volcano is not about the otherness of a foreign place (Mexico) so much as it is about the confusion and desires brought on by alcoholism. The hiding, the lying, the confusion, the need, all swirling around a failed marriage and the hopes of a new life. And the odd politics of the 1930s.

A solid read. Recommended. ****
